Listen to me, you people of Jerusalem and Judah. I will abandon you, and your land will become an empty desert.

Be smart, all you rulers, and pay close attention.

You refused correction and rejected my commands.

Our LORD, you bless everyone that you instruct and teach by using your Law.

Pay attention to advice and accept correction, so you can live sensibly.

Hold firmly to my teaching and never let go. It will mean life for you.

Enemies roared like lions and destroyed your land; towns lie burned and empty.

When we were young, we strayed and sinned, but then we realized what we had done. We are ashamed and disgraced and want to return to you."

But Jerusalem, there is still time for you to be saved. Wash the evil from your hearts and stop making sinful plans,

And now, I, the LORD All-Powerful, will flood Judah with my fiery anger until nothing is left--no people or animals, no trees or crops.

So you must say to them: People of Judah, I am the LORD your God, but you have refused to obey me, and you didn't change when I punished you. And now, you no longer even pretend to be faithful to me.

When I am finished with your land, there will be deathly silence in the empty ruins of Jerusalem and the towns of Judah--no happy voices, no sounds of parties or wedding celebrations.

I heard the LORD reply, "When I am finished, Jerusalem and the towns of Judah will be piles of ruins where only jackals live."

She let everyone see her naked body and didn't care if they knew she was a prostitute. That's why I turned my back on her, just as I had done with her older sister.

Your mother was unfaithful. She was disgraceful and said, "I'll run after my lovers. Everything comes from them-- my food and drink, my linen and wool, my olive oil and wine."

Even if you do have children, I will take them all and leave you to mourn. I will turn away, and you will sink down in deep trouble.

While you are prisoners in foreign lands, your own land will enjoy years of rest and refreshment, as it should have done each seventh year when you lived there.

God felt certain that Jerusalem would learn to respect and obey him. Then he would hold back from punishing the city and not wipe it out. But everyone there was eager to start sinning again.
