I am King Cyrus of Persia. The LORD God of heaven, who is also the God of Israel, has made me the ruler of all nations on earth. And he has chosen me to build a temple for him in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. The LORD God will watch over and encourage any of his people who want to go back to Jerusalem and help build the temple.

But he alone is God, and who can oppose him? God does as he pleases,

Your laws are my greatest joy! I follow their advice.

Even the most angry people will praise you when you are furious.

The Lord will do what he has planned against Jerusalem and Mount Zion. Then he will punish the proud and boastful king of Assyria,

Ethiopians will be food for mountain buzzards during the summer and for wild animals during the winter.

That peg is fastened firmly now, but someday it will be shaken loose and fall down. Then everything that was hanging on it will be destroyed. This is what the LORD All-Powerful has promised.

You, LORD, are my God! I will praise you for doing the wonderful things you had planned and promised since ancient times.

Sennacherib, now listen to me, the LORD. I planned all of this long ago. And you don't even know that I alone am the one who decided that you would do these things. I let you make ruins of fortified cities.

There's nothing I can say in answer to you, since you are the one who has done this to me. My life has turned sour; I will limp until I die.

Who appointed this ruler from the east? Who puts nations and kings in his power? His sword and his arrows turn them to dust blown by the wind.

I, the LORD, appointed a ruler in the north; now he comes from the east to honor my name. He tramples kings like mud, as potters trample clay.

I am also the one who says, "Cyrus will lead my people and obey my orders. Jerusalem and the temple will be rebuilt."

I have done the right thing by placing Cyrus in power, and I will make the roads easy for him to follow. I am the LORD All-Powerful! Cyrus will rebuild my city and set my people free without being paid a thing. I, the LORD, have spoken.

Come from the forest, you wild animals! Attack and gobble down your victims.

Only a few will escape and return to Judah. Then everyone who went to live in Egypt will know that when I say something will happen, it will--no matter what you say.

Attack Babylon, enemy archers; set up camp around the city, and don't let anyone escape. It challenged me, the holy God, so do to it what it did to other cities.

Babylonia, I will attack you like a lion from the forest, attacking sheep in a meadow along the Jordan. In a moment the flock runs, and the land is empty. Who will I choose to attack you? I will do it myself! No one can force me to fight or chase me away.

Listen to my plans for you, people of Babylonia. Your children will be dragged off, and your country destroyed.

and you and your army will die on those mountains. Then birds and wild animals will eat the flesh

God is no mere human! He doesn't tell lies or change his mind. God always keeps his promises.

They did what you in your power and wisdom had already decided would happen.

But if God is behind it, you cannot stop it anyway, unless you want to fight against God. The council members agreed with what he said,

God always does what he plans, and that's why he appointed Christ to choose us.

God did this according to his eternal plan. And he was able to do what he had planned because of all that Christ Jesus our Lord had done.

The sixth angel emptied his bowl on the great Euphrates River, and it completely dried up to make a road for the kings from the east.
