before capturing it in the ninth year of Hoshea's rule. The Assyrian king took the Israelites away to Assyria as prisoners. He forced some of them to live in the town of Halah, others to live near the Habor River in the territory of Gozan, and still others to live in towns where the Median people lived.

In the fourteenth year of Hezekiah's rule in Judah, King Sennacherib of Assyria invaded the country and captured every walled city, except Jerusalem.

Now I, the LORD God of Israel, will destroy both Jerusalem and Judah! People will hear about it but won't believe it.

At that time, the LORD started sending troops to rob and destroy towns in Judah. Some of these troops were from Babylonia, and others were from Syria, Moab, and Ammon. The LORD had sent his servants the prophets to warn Judah about this,

Terror strikes and pursues from every side.

They prefer night to day, since the terrors of the night are their friends.

Merely a glimpse of this monster makes all courage melt.

The fearsome arrows of God All-Powerful have filled my soul with their poison.

My heart is racing fast, and I am afraid of dying.

Ever since I was a child, I have been sick and close to death. You have terrified me and made me helpless.

Listen! Our bravest soldiers are running through the streets, screaming for help. Our messengers hoped for peace, but came home crying.

Isaiah, these are difficult and disgraceful times. Our nation is like a woman too weak to give birth, when it's time for her baby to be born.

The LORD God gives me the right words to encourage the weary. Each morning he awakens me eager to learn his teaching;

I am the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel, and you kings of Judah and you people of Jerusalem had better pay attention. I am going to bring so much trouble on this valley that everyone who hears about it will be shocked.

"Sound the trumpets, my people. Warn the people of Judah, 'Run for your lives!

The LORD said, "When all this happens, the king and his officials, the prophets and the priests will be shocked and terrified."

Then the people said, "Just hearing about them makes us tremble with fear, and we twist and turn in pain like a woman giving birth."

When you were angry, LORD, you invited my enemies like guests for a party. No one survived that day; enemies killed my children, my own little ones.

That was what I saw and heard. I turned pale with fear and kept it all to myself.

After this, I was so worn out and weak that it was several days before I could get out of bed and go about my duties for the king. I was disturbed by this vision that made no sense to me.

When I heard this message, I felt weak from fear, and my lips quivered. My bones seemed to melt, and I stumbled around. But I will patiently wait. Someday those vicious enemies will be struck by disaster.

The LORD said: Samuel, I am going to do something in Israel that will shock everyone who hears about it!
