So I thought it over and said to the leaders and officials, "How can you charge your own people interest?" Then I called a public meeting and accused the leaders

I could not have been abusive; I was terrified at the thought that God might punish me.

Destructive and deceitful lies are told about me,

Make orphans of his children and a widow of his wife;

They lend their money without charging interest, and they don't take bribes to hurt the innocent. Those who do these things will always stand firm.

Show them how angry you are! Be furious and catch them.

Our God, you are fearsome, and no one can oppose you when you are angry.

No one knows the full power of your furious anger, but it is as great as the fear that we owe to you.

There will be more widows in Judah than grains of sand on a beach. A surprise attack at noon! And the mothers in Jerusalem mourn for their children.

But now I am asking you to let their children starve or be killed in war. Let women lose their husbands and sons to disease and violence.

We are like children whose mothers are widows.

If any of your people become poor and unable to support themselves, you must help them, just as you are supposed to help foreigners who live among you.

Don't take advantage of them by charging any kind of interest or selling them food for profit. Instead, honor me by letting them stay where they now live.

Who can stand the heat of his furious anger? It flashes out like fire and shatters stones.

If you give to others, you will be given a full amount in return. It will be packed down, shaken together, and spilling over into your lap. The way you treat others is the way you will be treated.

You can charge a foreigner interest. But if you charge other Israelites interest, the LORD your God will not let you be successful in the land you are about to take.

People of Israel, if you make a sacred promise to give a gift to the LORD, then do it as soon as you can. If the LORD has to come looking for the gift you promised, you will be guilty of breaking that promise.

It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God!
