"Don't be afraid!" Moses replied. "God has come only to test you, so that by obeying him you won't sin."

Abraham answered: I did it because I didn't think any of you respected God, and I was sure that someone would kill me to get my wife.

Some years later God decided to test Abraham, so he spoke to him. Abraham answered, "Here I am, LORD."

"Don't hurt the boy or harm him in any way!" the angel said. "Now I know that you truly obey God, because you were willing to offer him your only son."

Each governor before me had been a burden to the people by making them pay for his food and wine and by demanding forty silver coins a day. Even their officials had been a burden to the people. But I respected God, and I didn't think it was right to be so hard on them.

God told us, "Wisdom means that you respect me, the Lord, and turn from sin."

But Moses answered, "Don't be afraid! Be brave, and you will see the LORD save you today. These Egyptians will never bother you again.

Respect and obey the LORD! This is the beginning of knowledge. Only a fool rejects wisdom and good advice.

If we truly love God, our sins will be forgiven; if we show him respect, we will keep away from sin.

Don't ever think that you are wise enough, but respect the LORD and stay away from evil.

Don't be afraid. I am with you. Don't tremble with fear. I am your God. I will make you strong, as I protect you with my arm and give you victories.

I am the LORD your God. I am holding your hand, so don't be afraid. I am here to help you.

I am the one you should fear and respect. I am the holy God, the LORD All-Powerful!

People of Israel, what does the LORD your God want from you? The LORD wants you to respect and follow him, to love and serve him with all your heart and soul,

If the prophet says this, don't listen! The LORD your God will be watching to find out whether or not you love him with all your heart and soul.

Do you remember the day you stood in the LORD's presence at Mount Sinai? The LORD said, "Moses, bring the people of Israel here. I want to speak to them so they will obey me as long as they live, and so they will teach their children to obey me too."

And if you and your descendants want to live a long time, you must always worship the LORD and obey his laws.

That's why the LORD our God demands that we obey his laws and worship him with fear and trembling. And if we do, he will protect us and help us be successful.

He also gave you manna, a kind of food your ancestors had never even heard about. The LORD was testing you to make you trust him, so that later on he could be good to you.

Don't forget how the LORD your God has led you through the desert for the past forty years. He wanted to find out if you were truly willing to obey him and depend on him,

Then Joshua told the people: Worship the LORD, obey him, and always be faithful. Get rid of the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived on the other side of the Euphrates River and in Egypt.

Samuel answered: Even though what you did was wrong, you don't need to be afraid. But you must always follow the LORD and worship him with all your heart.
