For example, some people don't have friends or family. But they are never satisfied with what they own, and they never stop working to get more. They should ask themselves, "Why am I always working to have more? Who will get what I leave behind?" What a senseless and miserable life!

But there will be rewards for those who live right and tell the truth, for those who refuse to take money by force or accept bribes, for all who hate murder and violent crimes.

Your greed made me furious. That's why I punished you and refused to be found, while you kept returning to your old sinful ways.

But all you think about is how to cheat or abuse or murder some innocent victim.

You are no better than animals, and you always want sex with someone else's wife.

So they all come and listen to you, but they refuse to do what you tell them. They claim to be faithful, but they are forever trying to cheat others out of their money.

You grab any field or house that you want; you cheat families out of homes and land.

You're doomed! You made your family rich at the expense of others. You even said to yourself, "I'm above the law."

Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Why should you be jealous, if I want to be generous?"

But I tell you that if you look at another woman and want her, you are already unfaithful in your thoughts.

Then he said to the crowd, "Don't be greedy! Owning a lot of things won't make your life safe."

The Pharisees really loved money. So when they heard what Jesus said, they made fun of him.

I have never wanted anyone's money or clothes.

The property was yours before you sold it, and even after you sold it, the money was still yours. What made you do such a thing? You didn't lie to people. You lied to God!"

In the Law there are many commands, such as, "Be faithful in marriage. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not want what belongs to others." But all of these are summed up in the command that says, "Love others as much as you love yourself."

Does this mean that the Law is sinful? Certainly not! But if it had not been for the Law, I would not have known what sin is really like. For example, I would not have known what it means to want something that belongs to someone else, unless the Law had told me not to do that.

will share in God's kingdom. Neither will any thief or greedy person or drunkard or anyone who curses and cheats others.

You are God's people, so don't let it be said that any of you are immoral or indecent or greedy.

Being greedy, indecent, or immoral is just another way of worshiping idols. You can be sure that people who behave in this way will never be part of the kingdom that belongs to Christ and to God.

Do not want anything that belongs to someone else. Don't want anyone's wife or husband, house, land, slaves, oxen, donkeys, or anything else.

After you conquer a nation, burn their idols. Don't get trapped into wanting the silver or gold on an idol. Even the metal on an idol is disgusting to the LORD,

that they are headed for hell! They worship their stomachs and brag about the disgusting things they do. All they can think about are the things of this world.

Don't be controlled by your body. Kill every desire for the wrong kind of sex. Don't be immoral or indecent or have evil thoughts. Don't be greedy, which is the same as worshiping idols.

Don't fall in love with money. Be satisfied with what you have. The Lord has promised that he will not leave us or desert us.

While we were in Jericho, I saw a beautiful Babylonian robe, two hundred pieces of silver, and a gold bar that weighed the same as fifty pieces of gold. I wanted them for myself, so I took them. Let me ask this. Have I ever taken anyone's ox or donkey or forced you to give me anything? Have I ever hurt anyone or taken a bribe to give an unfair decision? Answer me so the LORD and his chosen king can hear you. And if I have done any of these things, I will give it all back.

Why didn't you listen to the LORD? Why did you keep the animals and make him angry?"
