Don't forget how the LORD your God has led you through the desert for the past forty years. He wanted to find out if you were truly willing to obey him and depend on him,

Some years later God decided to test Abraham, so he spoke to him. Abraham answered, "Here I am, LORD."

Even when the leaders of Babylonia sent messengers to ask Hezekiah about the sign God had given him, God let Hezekiah give his own answer to test him and to see if he would remain faithful.

While Manasseh was held captive there, he asked the LORD God to forgive him and to help him.

Hozai wrote a lot about Manasseh, including his prayer and God's answer. But Hozai also recorded the evil things Manasseh did before turning back to God, as well as a list of places where Manasseh set up idols, and where he built local shrines and places to worship Asherah.

Because of your great mercy, you never abandoned them in the desert. And you always guided them with a cloud by day and a fire at night.

God does this to make us turn from sin and pride

With all my heart I praise the LORD! I will never forget how kind he has been.

The Israelites ate manna for forty years, before they came to the border of Canaan that was a settled land.

The LORD said to Moses, "I will send bread down from heaven like rain. Each day the people can go out and gather only enough for that day. That's how I will see if they obey me.

"Don't be afraid!" Moses replied. "God has come only to test you, so that by obeying him you won't sin."

Silver and gold are tested by flames of fire; our thoughts are tested by the LORD.

When that day comes, everyone who is proud will be put down. Only the LORD will be honored.

Your ancestors refused to ask for my help, though I had rescued them from Egypt and led them through a treacherous, barren desert, where no one lives or dares to travel.

I reminded them that I was the LORD their God and that they should obey my laws and teachings.

I had rescued you from Egypt, and for forty years I had led you through the desert. Then I gave you the land of the Amorites.

Your children will wander around in this desert forty years, suffering because of your sins, until all of you are dead.

Then Jesus said, "When the two men went home, it was the tax collector and not the Pharisee who was pleasing to God. If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored."

No one had to tell him what people were like. He already knew.

even though he had always been with us in the desert. During the daytime, the LORD was in the cloud, leading us in the right direction and showing us where to camp. And at night, he was there in the fire.

If the prophet says this, don't listen! The LORD your God will be watching to find out whether or not you love him with all your heart and soul.

The LORD has helped us and taken care of us during the past forty years that we have been in this huge desert. We've had everything we needed, and the LORD has blessed us and made us successful in whatever we have done.

Think about past generations. Ask your parents or any of your elders. They will tell you

But stop worrying! Just remember what the LORD your God did to Egypt and its king.

He also gave you manna, a kind of food your ancestors had never even heard about. The LORD was testing you to make you trust him, so that later on he could be good to you.

You know that you learn to endure by having your faith tested.

Be humble in the Lord's presence, and he will honor you.

In fact, God treats us with even greater kindness, just as the Scriptures say, "God opposes everyone who is proud, but he is kind to everyone who is humble."

Your faith will be like gold that has been tested in a fire. And these trials will prove that your faith is worth much more than gold that can be destroyed. They will show that you will be given praise and honor and glory when Jesus Christ returns.

I will even kill her followers. Then all the churches will see that I know everyone's thoughts and feelings. I will treat each of you as you deserve.

and I'm going to let those enemies stay. I'll use them to test Israel, because then I can find out if Israel will worship and obey me as their ancestors did.

Moses had told the Israelites what the LORD had commanded them to do, and now the LORD was using these nations to find out if Israel would obey.
