When God made us leave my father's home and start wandering, I told her, "If you really love me, you will tell everyone that I am your brother."

Then he sent a messenger to Elisha. Elisha was home at the time, and the important leaders of Israel were meeting with him. Even before the king's messenger arrived, Elisha told the leaders, "That murderer is sending someone to cut off my head. When you see him coming, shut the door and don't let him in. I'm sure the king himself will be right behind him."

You made friends with every crook you met, and you liked people who break their wedding vows.

But the people tested God Most High, and they refused to obey his laws.

The people started complaining to Moses, "Give us some water!" Moses replied, "Why are you complaining to me and trying to put the LORD to the test?"

The people had complained and tested the LORD by asking, "Is the LORD really with us?" So Moses named that place Massah, which means "testing" and Meribah, which means "complaining."

You can be sure of this: All crooks will be punished, but God's people won't.

The LORD doesn't like anyone who is conceited-- you can be sure they will be punished.

People cooperate to commit crime. Judges and leaders demand bribes, and rulers cheat in court.

I swear that not one of these Israelites will enter the land I promised to give their ancestors. These people have seen my power in Egypt and in the desert, but they will never see Canaan. They have disobeyed and tested me too many times.

Jesus answered, "The Scriptures also say, 'Don't try to test the Lord your God!' "

So the rich man called him in and said, "What is this I hear about you? Tell me what you have done! You are no longer going to work for me."

Now why are you trying to make God angry by placing a heavy burden on these followers? This burden was too heavy for us or our ancestors.

Some young men came in and wrapped up his body. Then they took it out and buried it.

And how can anyone tell them without being sent by the Lord? The Scriptures say it is a beautiful sight to see even the feet of someone coming to preach the good news.

We know that everything in the Law was written for those who are under its power. The Law says these things to stop anyone from making excuses and to let God show that the whole world is guilty.

And don't try to test Christ, as some of them did and were later bitten by poisonous snakes.
