I am bound by these chains because of what we people of Israel hope for. That's why I have called you here to talk about this hope of ours.

I was led away in chains along with the people of Judah and Jerusalem who were being taken to Babylonia. Nebuzaradan was the officer in charge of the guard, and while we were stopped at Ramah, the LORD had him set me free.

I agreed to come here, but I want to know why you sent for me."

I sent for you right away, and you have been good enough to come. All of us are here in the presence of the Lord God, so that we can hear what he has to say.

The army commander went over and arrested him and had him bound with two chains. Then he tried to find out who Paul was and what he had done.

When Paul saw that some of the council members were Sadducees and others were Pharisees, he shouted, "My friends, I am a Pharisee and the son of a Pharisee. I am on trial simply because I believe that the dead will be raised to life."

I am just as sure as these people are that God will raise from death everyone who is good or evil.

Paul answered, "Whether it takes a short time or a long time, I wish you and everyone else who hears me today would become just like me! Except, of course, for these chains."

Three days after we got there, Paul called together some of the Jewish leaders and said: My friends, I have never done anything to hurt our people, and I have never gone against the customs of our ancestors. But in Jerusalem I was handed over as a prisoner to the Romans.

Christ Jesus made me his prisoner, so that I could help you Gentiles.

As a prisoner of the Lord, I beg you to live in a way that is worthy of the people God has chosen to be his own.

I was sent to do this work, and that's the reason I am in jail. So pray that I will be brave and will speak as I should.

The Roman guards and all the others know that I am here in jail because I serve Christ.

I am signing this letter myself: PAUL. Don't forget that I am in jail. I pray that God will be kind to you.

Now Christ Jesus has come to show us the kindness of God. Christ our Savior defeated death and brought us the good news. It shines like a light and offers life that never ends.

And because of this message, I am locked up in jail and treated like a criminal. But God's good news isn't locked in jail,

I beg you to help Onesimus! He is like a son to me because I led him to Christ here in jail.

I would like to keep him here with me, where he could take your place in helping me while I am here in prison for preaching the good news.
