After the death of Jehoiada the priest, the leaders of Judah went to Joash and talked him into doing what they wanted.

So Joash collected everything he and his ancestors Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah had dedicated to the LORD, as well as the gold in the storage rooms in the temple and palace. He sent it all to Hazael as a gift, and when Hazael received it, he ordered his troops to leave Jerusalem.

and he was buried in the royal tombs in Jerusalem, because he had done so much good for the people of Israel, for God, and for the temple.

Right away, the people of Judah stopped worshiping in the temple of the LORD God, and they started worshiping idols and the symbols of the goddess Asherah. These sinful things made the LORD God angry at the people of Judah and Jerusalem,

Stay away from gossips-- they tell everything.

Watch out for anyone who tells lies and flatters-- they are out to get you.

Are you going to honor a fool? Why not shoot a slingshot with the rock tied tight?

A ruler who listens to lies will have corrupt officials.

Flattery is nothing less than setting a trap.

But when good people start sinning and doing disgusting things, will they live? No! All their good deeds will be forgotten, and they will be put to death because of their sins.

The king will use deceit to win followers from those who are unfaithful to God, but those who remain faithful will do everything possible to oppose him.

When it gets there and finds the place clean and fixed up,

I know how stubborn and rebellious you and the rest of the Israelites are. You have rebelled against the LORD while I have been alive, and it will only get worse after I am gone.

That is why I am doing my best to make sure that each of you remembers all of this after I am gone.

Soon after Gideon's death, the Israelites turned their backs on God again. They set up idols of Baal and worshiped Baal Berith as their god.
