Go say to David, "You promised me that Solomon would be the next king. So why is Adonijah now king?"

Your Majesty, everyone in Israel is waiting for you to announce who will be the next king.

Bring him back here, and he will take my place as king. He is the one I have chosen to rule Israel and Judah.

"You know that I was king for a little while," Adonijah replied. "And everyone in Israel accepted me as their ruler. But the LORD wanted my brother to be king, so now things have changed.

The LORD has done what he promised. I am the king of Israel like my father, and I've built a temple for the LORD our God.

David was old when he chose his son Solomon to be king of Israel.

David told the crowd: God chose my son Solomon to build the temple, but Solomon is young and has no experience. This is not just any building--this is the temple for the LORD God!

So Solomon became king after David his father. Solomon was successful, and everyone in Israel obeyed him.

David was rich and respected and lived to be an old man. Then he died, and his son Solomon became king.

I praise the LORD your God. He is pleased with you and has made you king of Israel. God loves the people of this country and will never desert them, so he has given them a king who will rule fairly and honestly.

Go ahead and appoint a king, but make sure that he is an Israelite and that he is the one the LORD has chosen.
