So Joshua summoned the twelve men he had selected from the Israelites, one man for each tribe,

so that this will be a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean to you? ’

Then Jacob said to his relatives, “Gather stones.” And they took stones and made a mound, then ate there by the mound.

And Moses wrote  down all the words of the Lord. He rose early the next morning and set up an altar and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel at the base of the mountain.

“Listen, Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan to enter and drive out nations greater and stronger than you,  with large cities fortified to the heavens.

When you cross the Jordan into the land the Lord your God is giving you, set up large stones and cover them with plaster.

When they came to the region of  the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh built a large, impressive altar there by the Jordan.
