Pestilent men squander a city. Yet truly, the wise avert fury.

By the blessing of the just, the city shall be exalted. And by the mouth of the impious, it will be subverted.

A mild response shatters anger. But a harsh word stirs up fury.

The indignation of a king is a herald of death. And the wise man will appease it.

A wise man, if he were to contend with the foolish, whether in anger or in laughter, would find no rest.

And the Lord said to me: "Even if Moses and Samuel were to stand before me, my soul would not be toward this people. Cast them away from my face, and let them depart!

And I sought among them for a man who might set up a hedge, and stand in the gap before me on behalf of the land, so that I might not destroy it; and I found no one.

And standing between the dead and the living, he prayed for the people, and the scourge ceased.

"Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has averted my wrath from the sons of Israel. For he was moved against them by my zeal, so that I myself, in my zeal, might not wipe away the sons of Israel.
