For how does it benefit a man, if he gains the whole world, and yet causes harm to his soul?
Answering him, Satan said, "Skin for skin; and everything that a man has, he will give for his life.
Can man be compared with God, even if he were perfect in knowledge?
Truly, you have hated discipline, and you have cast my sermons behind you.
And you have said, "What have we spoken against you?" You have said, "He labors in vain who serves God," and, "What advantage is it that we have kept his precepts, and that we have walked sorrowfully in the sight of the Lord of hosts?
For how does it benefit a man, if he gains the whole world, yet truly suffers damage to his soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
For whoever will have chosen to save his life, will lose it. But whoever will have lost his life, for my sake and for the Gospel, shall save it.
Or, what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
For how does it benefit a man, if he were to gain the whole world, yet lose himself, or cause himself harm?
But what fruit did you hold at that time, in those things about which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
