John was preaching, before the face of his advent, a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High. For you will go before the face of the Lord: to prepare his ways,

beginning from the baptism of John, until the day when he was taken up from us, one of these be made a witness with us of his Resurrection."
