Now Jesus knew that everything had been completed [i.e., relating to His crucifixion], so then He said, in order to fulfill Scripture [Psa. 69:21], “I am thirsty.”

After He had fasted forty days and nights, He was [very] hungry.

So, for this reason, He had to become like His brothers in every way [i.e., except that He never sinned], so that He could become a merciful and faithful Head Priest in things related to God’s [service], [and] that He could provide a means of purifying [Lev. 16:30] for people’s sins [i.e., a “covering over” or forgiveness of them].

During the forty days He was being put to the test by the devil, He did not eat anything; then after it was over He was [very] hungry.

Upon seeing in the distance a leafy fig tree, He approached it in hope of finding something on it [to eat]. But when He got there He found nothing but leaves on it, for it was not the season for figs [yet].

The next morning, [as they returned to the city], they passed by the fig tree and saw that it had withered, clear down to its roots.
