And all the people [in the house] were crying and beating their chests in mourning, so Jesus said [to them], “Do not cry, for the girl is not [really] dead but [only] sleeping.”
‘We [pretended like we] were making music [at a wedding] but you did not dance; we [pretended like we] were wailing [at a funeral] but you did not beat your chest [in mourning].’
And after the crowds that had gathered to witness this sight saw what had happened they left, beating their chests [i.e., as an expression of anguish over witnessing Jesus’ death].
And when Jesus came to the [synagogue official’s] house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him except Peter, James, John and the girl’s father and mother.
But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This illness will not result in [his] death, but was intended to bring honor to God, so that the Son of God would be honored by it.”
