“I cannot do anything by my own [authority]. I judge [people] based on what I hear [i.e., from the Father] and my judgment [of them] is just, because I do not look for what I want [to do], but for what He who sent me [i.e., God] wants.

So, Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son [of God] cannot do anything on His own [i.e., independently of the Father]; but [He does] what He sees His Father doing. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does as well.

Jesus replied to her, “I, who am speaking to you, am [the Messiah].”

The people [who heard this] did not understand that Jesus was speaking to them about the Father.

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am.” [Note: The words “I am” were probably construed as a reference to being Deity. See Ex. 3:14].

I am telling you this now, [even] before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe that I am [the Messiah].

[They said this] so that the words Jesus had spoken would be fulfilled, regarding the kind of death He would die. [Note: Jesus had predicted he would be “lifted up,” indicating a Roman crucifixion. See 12:32-33].
