Matthew 16:1

Amplified Bible

Now the Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus [to get something to use against Him], they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven [which would support His divine authority].

Answer [and correct the erroneous concepts of] a fool according to his folly, Otherwise he will be wise in his own eyes [if he thinks you agree with him]. [Matt 16:1-4; 21:24-27]

But the Pharisees went out and conspired against Him, discussing how they could destroy Him.

Then some Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem came to Jesus and said,

Jesus said to them, “Watch out and be on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

And Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”

Then the Pharisees went and conspired together plotting how to trap Him by [distorting] what He said. [Mark 12:13-17; Luke 20:20-26]

But Jesus, aware of their malice, asked, “Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites?

On that day some Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection [of the dead], came to Him and asked Him a question, [Mark 12:18-27; Luke 20:27-40]

saying: “The scribes and Pharisees have seated themselves in Moses’ chair [of authority as teachers of the Law];

The next day, that is, the day after the [day of] preparation [for the Sabbath], the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled before Pilate,

“For I say to you that unless your righteousness (uprightness, moral essence) is more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Master eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

Pharisees came to Jesus to test Him [intending to trick Him into saying something wrong], and asked Him, “Is it lawful [according to Scripture] for a man to divorce his wife and send her away?”

Should we pay [the tax] or should we not pay?” But knowing their hypocrisy, He asked them, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a coin (denarius) to look at.”

Some Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) came to Him, and began questioning Him, saying, [Matt 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-38]

And a certain lawyer [an expert in Mosaic Law] stood up to test Him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” [Matt 22:34-40; Mark 12:28-31]

Others, trying to test Him, were demanding of Him a sign from heaven.

But He saw through their trickery and said to them,

Now some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) came to Him [Matt 22:23-33; Mark 12:18-27]

They said this to test Him, hoping that they would have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and began writing on the ground with His finger.

And while Peter and John were talking to the people, the priests and the captain [who was in charge of the temple area and] of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,

But the high priest stood up, along with all his associates (that is, the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy and resentment.

For Jews demand signs (attesting miracles), and Greeks pursue [worldly] wisdom and philosophy,
