Mark 12:1

Amplified Bible

Jesus began to speak to them [the chief priests, scribes and elders who were questioning Him] in parables: “A man planted a vineyard and put a wall around it, and dug a pit for the wine press and built a tower; and he rented it out to tenant farmers and left the country. And it will come to pass in that day, in every place where there used to be a thousand vines, worth a thousand silver shekels, there will be briars and thorns.

“Yet I had planted you [O house of Israel as] a choice vine, A completely faithful seed. How then have you turned against Me Into degenerate shoots of a foreign and wild vine [alien to Me]?

Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! They are saying of me, ‘Is he not [just] speaking in parables and making allegories?’ ”

He told them many things in parables, saying, “Listen carefully: a sower went out to sow [seed in his field];

“What do you think? There was a man who had two sons, and he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’

“Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard and put a wall around it and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and rented it out to tenant farmers and went on a journey [to another country]. [Is 5:1-7; Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19]

When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his [share of the] fruit.

“For it is just like a man who was about to take a journey, and he called his servants together and entrusted them with his possessions. [Luke 19:12-27]

So they replied to Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

It is like a man away on a journey, who when he left home put his servants in charge, each with his particular task, and also ordered the doorkeeper to be continually alert.

So He called them to Himself and spoke to them in parables, “How can Satan drive out Satan?

And He taught them many things in parables, and in His teaching He said to them,

A few days later, the younger son gathered together everything [that he had] and traveled to a distant country, and there he wasted his fortune in reckless and immoral living.

So He said, “A nobleman went to a distant country to obtain for himself a kingdom, and [then] to return.

They asked Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?”

And He said, “To you [who have been chosen] it has been granted to know and recognize the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that though seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. [Is 6:9, 10; Jer 5:21; Ezek 12:2]

This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness together with the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received living oracles [divine words that still live] to be handed down to you. [Ex 19]
