and by others that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the [other] prophets of old had been resurrected.
And they answered, “Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah, or [just] one of the prophets.”
The disciples asked Him, “Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

They answered Him, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.”
They answered, “John the Baptist, and some say, Elijah; but others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back to life.”
They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the [promised] Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” [Deut 18:15, 18; Mal 4:5]
