His older house servants arose [in the night] and went to him to raise him up from the floor, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them.

Then Ezra came from before the house of God and went into the lodging place of Jehohanan son of Eliashib [for the night]. There he ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned over the returned exiles' faithlessness [and violation of God's law].

I AM weary of my life and loathe it! I will give free expression to my complaint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

For I have eaten the ashes [in which I sat] as if they were bread and have mingled my drink with weeping

For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.

O my God, my life is cast down upon me [and I find the burden more than I can bear]; therefore will I [earnestly] remember You from the land of the Jordan [River] and the [summits of Mount] Hermon, from the little mountain Mizar.

Insults and reproach have broken my heart; I am full of heaviness and I am distressingly sick. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.

I [earnestly] remember God; I am disquieted and I groan; I muse in prayer, and my spirit faints [overwhelmed]. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely [all] the people are like grass.

He has caused the arrows of His quiver to enter into my heart [the seat of my affections and desires].

My soul has them continually in remembrance and is bowed down within me.

And he was unable to see for three days, and he neither ate nor drank [anything].
