My days are like an evening shadow that stretches out and declines [with the sun]; and I am withered like grass.

I am gone like the shadow when it lengthens and declines; I toss up and down and am shaken off as the locust.

He comes forth like a flower and withers; he flees also like a shadow and continues not.

Man is like vanity and a breath; his days are as a shadow that passes away.

For all flesh (mankind) is like grass, and all its glory (honor) like [the] flower of grass. The grass withers and the flower drops off,

Yet you do not know [the least thing] about what may happen tomorrow. What is the nature of your life? You are [really] but a wisp of vapor (a puff of smoke, a mist) that is visible for a little while and then disappears [into thin air].

And the rich [person ought to glory] in being humbled [by being shown his human frailty], because like the flower of the grass he will pass away.

For who [limited to human wisdom] knows what is good for man in his life, all the days of his vain life which he spends as a shadow [going through the motions but accomplishing nothing]? For who can tell a man what will happen [to his work, his treasure, his plans] under the sun after he is gone?

He has broken me down on every side, and I am gone; my hope has He pulled up like a tree.

I AM [Jeremiah] the man who has seen affliction under the rod of His wrath.
