Numbers 14:37

Amplified Bible - Classic Edition

Even those men who brought the evil report of the land died by a plague before the Lord. [Heb. 3:17-19; Jude 5-7.]

A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.

Therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will punish Shemaiah of Nehelam and his offspring. He will not have anyone [born] to dwell among this people, nor will he see the good that I will do to My people, says the Lord, because he has spoken and taught rebellion against the Lord.

And there came forth fire from before the Lord and killed them, and they died before the Lord.

So they brought the Israelites an evil report of the land which they had scouted out, saying, The land through which we went to spy it out is a land that devours its inhabitants. And all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature.

I will smite them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and will make of you [Moses] a nation greater and mightier than they.

But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among the men who went to search the land, lived still.

And fire came forth from the Lord and devoured the 250 men who offered the incense.

Now those who died in the plague were 14,700, besides those who died in the matter of Korah.

And the people contended with Moses, and said, Would that we had died when our brethren died [in the plague] before the Lord! [Num. 16:49.]

And the ass saw Me and turned from Me these three times. If she had not turned from Me, surely I would have slain you and saved her alive.

Nevertheless those who died in the [smiting] plague were 24,000.

Nor discontentedly complain as some of them did–and were put out of the way entirely by the destroyer (death). [Num. 16:41, 49.]

Nevertheless, God was not pleased with the great majority of them, for they were overthrown and strewn down along [the ground] in the wilderness. [Num. 14:29, 30.]

And with whom was He irritated and provoked and grieved for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose dismembered bodies were strewn and left in the desert?

And to whom did He swear that they should not enter His rest, but to those who disobeyed [who had not listened to His word and who refused to be compliant or be persuaded]?

Now I want to remind you, though you were fully informed once for all, that though the Lord [at one time] delivered a people out of the land of Egypt, He subsequently destroyed those [of them] who did not believe [who refused to adhere to, trust in, and rely upon Him].
