Then the king of Israel said, Alas! The Lord has called [us] three kings together to be delivered into Moab's hand!

Then she came and told the man of God. He said, Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons live on the rest.

When the servant of the man of God rose early and went out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was around the city. Elisha's servant said to him, Alas, my master! What shall we do?

So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees.

The man of God said, Where did it fall? When shown the place, Elisha cut off a stick and threw it in there, and the iron floated.

The wicked borrow and pay not again [for they may be unable], but the [uncompromisingly] righteous deal kindly and give [for they are able].

If the ax is dull and the man does not whet the edge, he must put forth more strength; but wisdom helps him to succeed.

And He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an ax, and Lebanon [the Assyrian] with its majestic trees shall fall by the Mighty One and mightily. [Gen. 49:24; Isa. 9:6.]

They will stand a long way off, in terror of her torment, and they will cry, Woe and alas, the great city, the mighty city, Babylon! In one single hour how your doom (judgment) has overtaken you!

Alas, alas for the great city that was robed in fine linen, in purple and scarlet, bedecked and glittering with gold, with precious stones, and with pearls! [Ezek. 27:31, 36.]

And they threw dust on their heads as they wept and grieved, exclaiming, Woe and alas, for the great city, where all who had ships on the sea grew rich [through her extravagance] from her great wealth! In one single hour she has been destroyed and has become a desert! [Ezek. 27:30-34.]
