Now it came to pass in those days, there went out a decree from C\'e6sar Augustus, that all the world should be enrolled.

He saith, Yea. And when he came into the house, Jesus spake first to him, saying, {\cf6 What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth, from whom do they receive toll or tribute? from their sons, or from strangers?}

But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.\par

while Paul said in his defense, Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against C\'e6sar, have I sinned at all.

And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have power over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute {\i upon} our fields and our vineyards.

Also we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, the singers, porters, Nethinim, or servants of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose tribute, custom, or toll, upon them.

Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful unto the kings.

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, {\cf6 Why make ye trial of me, ye hypocrites?

Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto C\'e6sar, or not?
