On the left hand, when he doth work, but I cannot behold him;\par\tab He hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him.
And I will wait for Jehovah, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.
How long, O Jehovah? wilt thou hide thyself for ever?\par\tab {\i How long} shall thy wrath burn like fire?
Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not:\par\tab He passeth on also, but I perceive him not.
Behold, I go forward, but he is not {\i there};\par\tab And backward, but I cannot perceive him;
But he knoweth the way that I take;\par\tab When he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
How much less when thou sayest thou beholdest him not,\par\tab The cause is before him, and thou waitest for him!
Yet these things thou didst hide in thy heart;\par\tab I know that this is with thee:
When he giveth quietness, who then can condemn?\par\tab And when he hideth his face, who then can behold him?\par\tab Alike whether {\i it be done} unto a nation, or unto a man:
Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.
