Your country is desolate; your cities are burned with fire; your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.

Jehovah, how long shall the wicked,\par\tab How long shall the wicked triumph?

And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she shall be desolate and sit upon the ground.\par

Return, O Jehovah; how long?\par\tab And let it repent thee concerning thy servants.

And I will make your cities a waste, and will bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savor of your sweet odors.

In mine ears {\i saith} Jehovah of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.

I will make a man more rare than fine gold, even a man than the pure gold of Ophir.

For the palace shall be forsaken; the populous city shall be deserted; the hill and the watch-tower shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks;

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.

Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man passed through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.

Thy holy cities are become a wilderness, Zion is become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

A lion is gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer of nations; he is on his way, he is gone forth from his place, to make thy land desolate, that thy cities be laid waste, without inhabitant.

For thus saith Jehovah concerning the house of the king of Judah: Thou art Gilead unto me, {\i and} the head of Lebanon; {\i yet} surely I will make thee a wilderness, {\i and} cities which are not inhabited.

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Ye have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah; and, behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwelleth therein,

And the king of Babylon smote them, and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was carried away captive out of his land.\par

In all your dwelling-places the cities shall be laid waste, and the high places shall be desolate; that your altars may be laid waste and made desolate, and your idols may be broken and cease, and your sun-images may be hewn down, and your works may be abolished.

Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said unto that certain one who spake, How long shall be the vision {\i concerning} the continual {\i burnt-offering}, and the transgression that maketh desolate, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?

In that day shall they take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, {\i and} say, We are utterly ruined: he changeth the portion of my people: how doth he remove {\i it} from me! to the rebellious he divideth our fields.

and I will cut off the cities of thy land, and will throw down all thy strongholds.

Therefore I also have smitten thee with a grievous wound; I have made thee desolate because of thy sins.

And you will I scatter among the nations, and I will draw out the sword after you: and your land shall be a desolation, and your cities shall be a waste.

And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou didst not hearken unto the voice of Jehovah thy God.

And it shall come to pass, that, as Jehovah rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you, so Jehovah will rejoice over you to cause you to perish, and to destroy you; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest in to possess it.

Yet shall the land be desolate because of them that dwell therein, for the fruit of their doings.\par
