And the harp and the lute, the tabret and the pipe, and wine, are {\i in} their feasts; but they regard not the work of Jehovah, neither have they considered the operation of his hands.\par

Because they turned aside from following him,\par\tab And would not have regard in any of his ways:

These are they who are hidden rocks in your love-feasts when they feast with you, shepherds that without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine from them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified.

Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day:

and behold, joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine: let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we shall die.

that say, Let him make speed, let him hasten his work, that we may see it; and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!

Wherefore didst thou flee secretly, and steal away from me, and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth and with songs, with tabret and with harp;

Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

Only fear Jehovah, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things he hath done for you.

I am this day fourscore years old: can I discern between good and bad? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?

The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.

Ho Ariel, Ariel, the city where David encamped! add ye year to year; let the feasts come round:

Come ye, {\i say they}, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to-morrow shall be as this day, {\i a day} great beyond measure.\par

And I will cause the noise of thy songs to cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard.
