Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! a potsherd among the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?

But now, O Jehovah, thou art our Father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith Jehovah. Behold, as the clay in the potter's hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel.

Ye turn things upside down! Shall the potter be esteemed as clay; that the thing made should say of him that made it, He made me not; or the thing formed say of him that formed it, He hath no understanding?\par

Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that wieldeth it? as if a rod should wield them that lift it up, {\i or} as if a staff should lift up {\i him that is} not wood.

There is no wisdom nor understanding\par\tab Nor counsel against Jehovah.

I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against Jehovah.

Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?\par

Behold, he seizeth {\i the prey}, who can hinder him?\par\tab Who will say unto him, What doest thou?\par

Why dost thou strive against him,\par\tab For that he giveth not account of any of his matters?

Shall he that cavilleth contend with the Almighty?\par\tab He that argueth with God, let him answer it.\par

Whatsoever hath been, the name thereof was given long ago; and it is known what man is; neither can he contend with him that is mightier than he.

Woe unto him that saith unto a father, What begettest thou? or to a woman, With what travailest thou?\par

And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah thou shalt say, Thus saith Jehovah: Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?

and all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

{\i He is} wise in heart, and mighty in strength:\par\tab Who hath hardened himself against him, and prospered?—

Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast fashioned me as clay;\par\tab And wilt thou bring me into dust again?

And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee; for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us by means of our iniquities.\par
