For thou hast been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.

But I will leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall take refuge in the name of Jehovah.

And a man shall be as a hiding-place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest, as streams of water in a dry place, as the shade of a great rock in a weary land.

Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world {\i to be} rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him?

He shall dwell on high; his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks; his bread shall be given {\i him}; his waters shall be sure.\par

Yet setteth he the needy on high from affliction,\par\tab And maketh {\i him} families like a flock.

Because of the oppression of the poor, because of the sighing of the needy,\par\tab Now will I arise, saith Jehovah;\par\tab I will set him in the safety he panteth for.

For all these things hath my hand made, and {\i so} all these things came to be, saith Jehovah: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and that trembleth at my word.

But thus saith Jehovah, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered; for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

And the angel of Jehovah went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

O Jehovah, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee: be thou our arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.

The meek also shall increase their joy in Jehovah, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

But the multitude of thy foes shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be in an instant suddenly.

Or else let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; {\i yea}, let him make peace with me.

For thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength; therefore thou plantest pleasant plants, and settest it with strange slips.

What then shall one answer the messengers of the nation? That Jehovah hath founded Zion, and in her shall the afflicted of his people take refuge.\par

but with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

I cleave unto thy testimonies:\par\tab O Jehovah, put me not to shame.

He will have pity on the poor and needy,\par\tab And the souls of the needy he will save.

He will judge the poor of the people,\par\tab He will save the children of the needy,\par\tab And will break in pieces the oppressor.

All my bones shall say,\par\tab Jehovah, who is like unto thee,\par\tab Who deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him,\par\tab Yea, the poor and the needy from him that robbeth him?

I would haste me to a shelter\par\tab From the stormy wind and tempest.

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High\par\tab Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Jehovah is thy keeper:\par\tab Jehovah is thy shade upon thy right hand.

And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Give counsel, execute justice; make thy shade as the night in the midst of the noonday; hide the outcasts; betray not the fugitive.

and a spirit of justice to him that sitteth in judgment, and strength to them that turn back the battle at the gate.\par

For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scoffer ceaseth, and all they that watch for iniquity are cut off;

When thou criest, let them that thou hast gathered deliver thee; but the wind shall take them, a breath shall carry them all away: but he that taketh refuge in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain.\par

O Jehovah, my strength, and my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of affliction, unto thee shall the nations come from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Our fathers have inherited nought but lies, {\i even} vanity and things wherein there is no profit.

And thou shalt ascend, thou shalt come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy hordes, and many peoples with thee.\par

And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee;\par\tab For thou, Jehovah, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.
