Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world {\i to be} rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him?

At that season Jesus answered and said, {\cf6 I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou didst hide these things from the wise and understanding, and didst reveal them unto babes:

Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou established strength,\par\tab Because of thine adversaries,\par\tab That thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.\par

for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to withstand or to gainsay.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves;

and said unto him, Hearest thou what these are saying? And Jesus saith unto them, {\cf6 Yea: did ye never read, {\b Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise}?}

But I will leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall take refuge in the name of Jehovah.

For, His letters, they say, are weighty and strong; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.

The meek also shall increase their joy in Jehovah, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

And as Jesus passed by from thence, he saw a man, called Matthew, sitting at the place of toll: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.\par

And certain also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, What would this babbler say? others, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

This Moses whom they refused, saying, {\b Who made thee a ruler and a judge?} him hath God sent {\i to be} both a ruler and a deliverer with the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush.

that frustrateth the signs of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;

The wise men are put to shame, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of Jehovah; and what manner of wisdom is in them?

For seeing that in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom knew not God, it was God's good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save them that believe.

But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is from God; that we might know the things that were freely given to us of God.

And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden all thy life long unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? and he said, Nay.
