Ye have said, It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept his charge, and that we have walked mournfully before Jehovah of hosts?

Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find your own pleasure, and exact all your labors.

And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with lamps; and I will punish the men that are settled on their lees, that say in their heart, Jehovah will not do good, neither will he do evil.

That thou sayest, What advantage will it be unto thee? And, What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?

Yet even now, saith Jehovah, turn ye unto me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:

For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing That he should delight himself with God.

Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

Who said unto God, Depart from us; And, What can the Almighty do for us?

Yet thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.

Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst. But thou saidst, It is in vain; no, for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

But they say, It is in vain; for we will walk after our own devices, and we will do every one after the stubbornness of his evil heart.

They return, but not to him that is on high; they are like a deceitful bow; their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.

Your words have been stout against me, saith Jehovah. Yet ye say, What have we spoken against thee?

But since we left off burning incense to the queen of heaven, and pouring out drink-offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.
