Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, that have been borne by me from their birth, that have been carried from the womb;

Give them, O Jehovah—what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have not lent, neither have men lent to me; yet every one of them doth curse me.

By thee have I been holden up from the womb; Thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: My praise shall be continually of thee.

Let them be as a snail which melteth and passeth away, Like the untimely birth of a woman, that hath not seen the sun.

Because it shut not up the doors of my mother’s womb, Nor hid trouble from mine eyes.

Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts, that I should suck?

Wherefore I praised the dead that have been long dead more than the living that are yet alive;

yea, better than them both did I esteem him that hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

because he slew me not from the womb; and so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great.

If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul be not filled with good, and moreover he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he:

moreover it hath not seen the sun nor known it; this hath rest rather than the other:
