And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God.

And the LORD said to Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff necked people:

But I said to their children in the wilderness, Walk you not in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols:

Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God.

For I know your rebellion, and your stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, you have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?

You stiff necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do you.

But they rebelled against me, and would not listen to me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt: then I said, I will pour out my fury on them, to accomplish my anger against them in the middle of the land of Egypt.

And be not you like your fathers, and like your brothers, which trespassed against the LORD God of their fathers, who therefore gave them up to desolation, as you see.

You have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.

Furthermore the LORD spoke to me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff necked people:

For the LORD had said to Moses, Say to the children of Israel, You are a stiff necked people: I will come up into the middle of you in a moment, and consume you: therefore now put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what to do to you.

To a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the middle of you; for you are a stiff necked people: lest I consume you in the way.

Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would hold to the Lord.

That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:

Our fathers understood not your wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of your mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.

God sets the solitary in families: he brings out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.

If you prepare your heart, and stretch out your hands toward him;

That prepares his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, though he be not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary.

However, the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts to the God of their fathers.

Nevertheless there are good things found in you, in that you have taken away the groves out of the land, and have prepared your heart to seek God.

And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.

But you that did join to the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.

And he said, If now I have found grace in your sight, O LORD, let my LORD, I pray you, go among us; for it is a stiff necked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.

And they came to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying,

According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, with which they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also to you.

How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!

Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:
