Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;

How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.

For it is a day of trouble, and of treading down, and of perplexity by the Lord GOD of hosts in the valley of vision, breaking down the walls, and of crying to the mountains.

The best of them is as a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge: the day of your watchmen and your visitation comes; now shall be their perplexity.

Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

And they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.

The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying to him, Get you out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill you.

And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

And as soon as he knew that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
