And when he was in affliction, he sought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers,

I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust.

Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer you? I will lay my hand on my mouth.

And there is hope in your end, said the LORD, that your children shall come again to their own border.

That you may remember, and be confounded, and never open your mouth any more because of your shame, when I am pacified toward you for all that you have done, said the Lord GOD.

Who knows if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering to the LORD your God?

Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

Seek you the LORD, all you meek of the earth, which have worked his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be you shall be hid in the day of the LORD's anger.

And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes to heaven, but smote on his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

Now we know that what things soever the law said, it said to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
