They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepares deceit.

When he gives quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hides his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:

For we are consumed by your anger, and by your wrath are we troubled.

I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

Out of the mouth of the most High proceeds not evil and good?

They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springs up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.

That which grows of its own accord of your harvest you shall not reap, neither gather the grapes of your vine undressed: for it is a year of rest to the land.

Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD has not done it?

Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the LORD has not done all this.

Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

And see, if it goes up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he has done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.
