Proverbs 9:7

A Conservative Version

He who corrects a scoffer gets himself reviling. And he who reproves a wicked man [gets] himself a bruise.

A scoffer does not like to be reproved. He will not go to the wise.

Speak not in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

and say, Thus says the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction until I come in peace.

Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way did the Spirit of LORD go from me to speak to thee?

And Ahab said to Elijah, Have thou found me, O my enemy? And he answered, I have found thee because thou have sold thyself to do that which is evil in the sight of LORD.

And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel?

Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects. Therefore do not despise thou the chastening of the Almighty.

A wise son [hears] his father's instruction, but a scoffer listens not to rebuke.

But they held their peace, and answered him not a word. For the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
