A Conservative Version

Forsake not thine own friend, and thy father's friend. And go not to thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity. Better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far off.

He who makes many friends [does it] to his own destruction, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Thus Joash the king did not remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. And when he died, he said, LORD look upon it, and require it.

For all my father's house were but dead men before my lord the king. Yet thou set thy servant among those who ate at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should cry any more to the king?

Thou shall not see thy brother's ox or his sheep go astray, and hide thyself from them. Thou shall surely bring them again to thy brother.
