The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel,

He who loves wisdom delights his father, but he who keeps company with harlots wastes [his] substance.

A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.

The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself causes shame to his mother.

A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish man despises his mother.

He who begets a fool [it is] to his sorrow, and the father of a fool has no joy.

A foolish son is the calamity of his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

And further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge. Yea, he pondered, and sought out, [and] set in order many proverbs.

And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have rule over all my labor in which I have labored, and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

And he spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were a thousand and five.

A wise son [hears] his father's instruction, but a scoffer listens not to rebuke.

My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him who reproaches me.

Correct thy son, and he will give thee rest, yea, he will give delight to thy soul.
