Jeremiah 2:13

A Conservative Version

For my people have committed two evils: They have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

O LORD, the hope of Israel, all who forsake thee shall be put to shame. Those who depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken LORD, the fountain of living waters.

And he said to me, I have become, I, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to him who is thirsty of the fountain of the water of life freely.

For with thee is the fountain of life. In thy light we shall see light.

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, bright as crystal, coming out from the throne of God and of the Lamb,

Why do ye spend money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Hearken diligently to me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And he who hears, let him say, Come. And he who is thirsty, let him come. He who desires, let him take the water of life freely.

For my people are foolish. They do not know me. They are sottish sons, and they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

Has a nation changed [its] gods, which yet are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.

These men are waterless wells, and clouds driven by a fierce wind, for whom the gloom of darkness has been reserved into an age.

Have thou not procured this to thyself, in that thou have forsaken LORD thy God when he led thee by the way?

And I will utter my judgments against them concerning all their wickedness, in that they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.

For to the man who pleases him [God] gives wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he gives travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Thou have rejected me, says LORD. Thou have gone backward. Therefore I have stretched out my hand against thee, and destroyed thee. I am weary with relenting.

For he said, Surely, they are my people, sons that will not deal falsely. So he was their Savior.

Therefore my people have gone into captivity for lack of knowledge, and their honorable men are famished, and their multitude are parched with thirst.

The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master's crib, [but] Israel does not know; my people does not consider.

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do, and, behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.

Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities, all is vanity.

And they cried to LORD, and said, We have sinned because we have forsaken LORD, and have served the Baalim and the Ashtaroth, but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.

The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means. And my people love to have it so. And what will ye do in the end thereof?

Then I saw all labor and every skilful work, that for this a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed, they, their kings, their rulers, and their priests, and their prophets,

For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, and with knowledge, and with skillfulness, yet he shall leave it to a man who has not labored in it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and, behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods. Therefore I will save you no more.

O my people, what have I done to thee? And in what have I wearied thee? Testify against me.

But of late my people have risen up as an enemy. Ye strip off the robe with the garment from those who pass by securely [as men] turning back from war.

Shall the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field? [Or] shall the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up?

For among my people are found wicked men. They watch as fowlers lay in wait. They set a trap; they catch men.

Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, all is vanity.

Jesus answered and said to her, If thou had known the gift of God, and who it is who says to thee, Give me to drink, thou would have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.

The woman says to him, Sir, thou have not even a container, and the well is deep. From where then have thou the living water?

And LORD said to Moses, Behold, thou shall sleep with thy fathers. And this people will rise up, and play the harlot after the strange gods of the land where they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant whic

Therefore with joy ye shall draw water out of the wells of salvation.

And their ranking men send their little ones to the waters. They come to the cisterns, and find no water. They return with their vessels empty. They are put to shame and confounded, and cover their heads,

Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it to other gods that they knew not, they and their fathers and the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents,

And he brought me back to the door of the house. And, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward, for the forefront of the house was toward the east. And the waters came down from under, from the right

In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.

Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched.

Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evil-doers, sons who deal corruptly! They have forsaken LORD. They have despised the Holy One of Israel. They have gone away backward.

that I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.
