A Conservative Version

Like a swallow [or] a crane, so I chattered. I moaned as a dove. My eyes fail [with looking] upward. O LORD, I am oppressed, be thou my surety.

We all roar like bears, and moan greatly like doves. We look for justice, but there is none, for salvation, but it is far off from us.

I am weary with my crying. My throat is dried. My eyes fail while I wait for my God.

And it is decreed. She is uncovered. She is carried away, and her handmaids moan as with the voice of doves, beating upon their breasts.

But those of them who escape shall escape, and shall be on the mountains like doves of the valleys. All of them moaning, each one in his iniquity.

I am a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches.

Our eyes do yet fail [in looking] for our vain help. In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

Make haste to answer me, O LORD, my spirit fails. Hide not thy face from me, lest I become like those who go down into the pit.

My eyes fail for thy word, while I say, When will thou comfort me?

Give now a pledge, be surety for me with thyself. Who is there that will strike hands with me?

By so much, Jesus has become the surety of a better covenant.

Attend to me, and answer me. I am restless in my complaint, and moan,

But Nineveh has been from of old like a pool of water. Yet they flee away. Stand, stand, [they cry], but none looks back.
