A Conservative Version

For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance forever, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. And how the wise man dies even as the fool!

There is no remembrance of the former [things], nor shall there be any remembrance of the latter that are to come, among those who shall come after.


For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know not anything, nor have they any more a reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.


Shall thy wonders be known in the dark, and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?


Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.


And inasmuch as it is reserved to men once to die, and after this, judgment,


Then those who feared LORD spoke one with another, and LORD hearkened, and heard, and a book of remembrance was written before him, for those who feared LORD, and who thought upon his name.


For what advantage has the wise man more than the fool? What has the poor man, who knows how to walk before the living?


The wise man's eyes are in his head, and the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that one event happens to them all.


For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and the place thereof shall know it no more.


For he shall see it. Wise men die. The fool and the brutish alike perish, and leave their wealth to others.


And the king lamented for Abner, and said, Should Abner die as a fool dies?


And Joseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation.


Then said I in my heart, As it happens to the fool, so it will happen even to me, and why then was I more wise? Then said I in my heart that this also is vanity.


It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting. For that is the end of all men, and the living will lay it to his heart.


So I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were praised in the city where they had so done. This also is vanity.


Now there was found in it a poor wise man. And he by his wisdom delivered the city, yet no man remembered that same poor man.


The wisdom of a prudent man is to understand his way, but the folly of fools is deceit.
