O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes. Make thee mourning, as for an only son, a most bitter lamentation. For the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.

Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs, for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own. Let a cloud dwell upon it. Let blackness come upon it.

And thou shall rejoice in thy feast, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy man-servant, and thy maid-servant, and the Levite, and the sojourner, and the fatherless, and the widow, who are within thy gates.

The joy of our heart is ceased, our dance is turned into mourning.

Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will take no delight in your solemn assemblies.

Therefore my harp has [turned] to mourning, and my pipe into the voice of those who weep.
