And after this it came to be that the sovereign of the children of Ammon died, and Ḥanun his son reigned in his place.


And Dawiḏ said, “Let me show loving-commitment to Ḥanun son of Naḥash, as his father showed loving-commitment to me.” So Dawiḏ sent by the hand of his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And when Dawiḏ’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon,


And it came to be, when Dawiḏ had come to Maḥanayim, that Shoḇi son of Naḥash from Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Maḵir son of Ammi’ĕl from Lo Ḏeḇar, and Barzillai the Gil‛aḏite from Roḡelim,


Dawiḏ then sent messengers to the men of Yaḇĕsh Gil‛aḏ, and said to them, “You are blessed of יהוה, for you have shown this loving-commitment to your master, to Sha’ul, that you buried him.


And Ben-Haḏaḏ said to him, “The cities which my father took from your father I return. And set up market-places for yourself in Dammeseq, as my father did in Shomeron.” And Aḥaḇ said, “I send you away with this covenant.” And he made a covenant with him and sent him away.


And all Yaḇĕsh Gil‛aḏ heard of all that the Philistines had done to Sha’ul,


and all the brave men arose and took the body of Sha’ul and the bodies of his sons. And they brought them to Yaḇĕsh, and buried their bones under the tamarisk tree at Yaḇĕsh, and fasted seven days.


Would he make a covenant with you to be taken as a servant forever?


“Do not make a covenant with them nor with their mighty ones.


“Do not listen to Ḥizqiyahu, for thus said the sovereign of Ashshur, ‘Make peace with me by a present and come out to me. And let each of you eat from his own vine and each from his own fig tree, and each of you drink the waters of his own cistern,


Also, when all the Yehuḏim who were in Mo’aḇ, and among the Ammonites, and in Eḏom, and who were in all the lands, heard that the sovereign of Baḇel had left a remnant of Yehuḏah, and that he had set over them Geḏalyahu son of Aḥiqam, son of Shaphan,


and they said to him, “Do you certainly know that Ba‛alis sovereign of the Ammonites has sent Yishma‛ĕl son of Nethanyah to strike you – a being?” But Geḏalyahu son of Aḥiqam would not believe them.


And he took one of the royal seed, and made a covenant with him, and put him under oath. And he took away the mighty of the land,


“An Ammonite or Mo’aḇite shall not enter the assembly of יהוה, even a tenth generation of them shall not ever enter the assembly of יהוה,


Therefore the displeasure of יהוה burned against Yisra’ĕl. And He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the children of Ammon.


And it came to be, some time later, that the children of Ammon fought against Yisra’ĕl.


And they said, “Which one of the tribes of Yisra’ĕl did not come up to Mitspah to יהוה?” And see, no one had come to the camp from Yaḇĕsh Gil‛aḏ to the assembly.


“And when you saw that Naḥash sovereign of the children of Ammon came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but let a sovereign reign over us,’ when יהוה your Elohim was your sovereign.


And Sha’ul took the reign over Yisra’ĕl, and fought against all his enemies round about, against Mo’aḇ, and against the children of Ammon, and against Eḏom, and against the sovereigns of Tsoḇah, and against the Philistines. And wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment.
