His disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house shall eat me up.


For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; And the reproaches of them that reproach thee are fallen upon me.


For they that dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him.


And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword: and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.


But Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.


Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner: This was from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes?


and said unto him, Hearest thou what these are saying? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea: did ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?


and he saith unto them, It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer: but ye make it a den of robbers.


But go ye and learn what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice: for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.


Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? Who eat up my people as they eat bread, And call not upon God.


And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.


When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, That was to my reproach.
