Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?


Then arose Ezra, and made the chiefs of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. So they sware.


neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.


Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.


I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.


They that forsake the law praise the wicked: But such as keep the law contend with them.


In whose eyes a reprobate is despised; But he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.


Also I shook out my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.


And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgement be executed upon him with all diligence, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.


Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; and him shalt thou serve, and shalt swear by his name.


and thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.


Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:


And he looked behind him and saw them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she-bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.


and their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people.


Hot indignation hath taken hold upon me, Because of the wicked that forsake thy law.


And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.
