They went up by the mountains, they went down by the valleys, Unto the place which thou hadst founded for them.


The cords of death compassed me, And the pains of Sheol gat hold upon me I found trouble and sorrow


Make haste to answer me, O LORD; my spirit faileth: Hide not thy face from me; Lest I become like them that go down into the pit.


For thou wilt not leave my soul to Sheol; Neither wilt thou suffer thine holy one to see corruption.


The cords of Sheol were round about me: The snares of death came on me.


O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from Sheol: Thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.


What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?


But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; But I will trust in thee.


Which by his strength setteth fast the mountains; Being girded about with might:


I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.


I said, In the noontide of my days I shall go into the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years.


Behold, it was for my peace that I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption; for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.


Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?


then will I bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, to the people of old time, and will make thee to dwell in the nether parts of the earth, in the places that are desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I will set glory in the land of the living:


to the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves in their stature, neither set their top among the thick boughs, nor that their mighty ones stand up in their height, even all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.


The mountains saw thee, and were afraid; The tempest of waters passed by: The deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high.


He stood, and measured the earth; He beheld, and drove asunder the nations: And the eternal mountains were scattered, The everlasting hills did bow; His goings were as of old.


And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.


For a fire is kindled in mine anger, And burneth unto the lowest pit, And devoureth the earth with her increase, And setteth on fire the foundations of the mountains.
