And the Lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.


They say to God, ‘Depart from us! We do not desire the knowledge of thy ways.


The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.


O Lord, why dost thou make us err from thy ways and harden our heart, so that we fear thee not? Return for the sake of thy servants, the tribes of thy heritage.


Thus says the Lord concerning this people: “They have loved to wander thus, they have not restrained their feet; therefore the Lord does not accept them now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.”


Heaping oppression upon oppression, and deceit upon deceit, they refuse to know me, says the Lord.


And the Lord's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was consumed.


And for about forty years he bore with them in the wilderness.


He led them out, having performed wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.


And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a base mind and to improper conduct.


And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.


And in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them,


And with whom was he provoked forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
